Major snow storm

1 Attachment(s)
last night. Wet and heavy and power went out about 3 am. I got up about 5 am and started doing the backup thing...not shtf just a minor inconvenience...

Fired up our little honda generator and got our monitor heating stove going and heat back in the place and lights. Turned on the radio and scanner and listened to the chaos going on out there that always happens during the first major snowstorm. :emotions16:

Phone landlines were down too and that is not usual for us during a power outage. They are back up at the moment, but spotty and thats how I'm on the net. My ATT cell phone worked so I had communications, but my mom is on a different cell provider and hers wasn't going. Went down and fired up her honda generator and got her heating stove going and lights. Came back home got the campstove fired up and made coffee and took her down some along with the handheld walkie talkie so we could communicate between the two houses. Shes 80 years old and lives on my property in her house.

Shoveled decks and puttered around. Not a big deal but a power outage is always a good test for "am i really prepared and what in my plan didn't work".

We have woodstoves in both houses so we don't need a generator for heat. Candles are all we need for light. Lots of snow out there to melt for water...not a big deal.

:)

Turning your power off in the winter is a great test for preparation awareness and finetuning the backup temporary operation plan.

Turning your power off for a month and hanging up the car keys and not going anywhere is a great test for the backup longterm operation plan.

Re: Major snow storm

lol...thats not a treehouse thats a cache...

in old time alaska caches were used to store meat during the winter (think outdoor freezer cause their was no electricity and where the animals can't get to it). If i was using it for that i would take old wood stove piping and tack it to the legs so the critters can't climb...

during the summer months when the occupants of their cabin were away, say after the winter trapping months and they moved further to the coast for the commercial fishing season the caches were used to store things like rifles and other gear in case the cabins got broke into by a bear and trashed the place...

i have a small remote cabin the bears broke into 8 years (in the spring is when they do it when they come out of hibernation and looking for a little free snack and before the salmon start running and they are busy fishing on streams) out of the 25 years i've owned it and so i know what kind of damage they can do !

i had a box of wine inside the cabin one year and a black bear broke in during the spring, bit the box of wine and lapped it up and got a little tipsy...he chewed up every thing in the place and it took me two hours just to clean the place up ! Let alone having to replace a lot of items...

Bear saliva is incredibly hard to clean off of things...its like glue !

What is that wooden thing hanging off the eave of the main house? Looks like another one on the left side of the treehouse.

At first I thought is was a flying wooden UFO.

i have honda generators. its the small one only a 1000 watts and for temporary backup power only. Right now its on low throttle cause of low demand and just purring and running my heater, computer and the wife is watching satellite tv...so pretty much all we want.

i have a Toro 3000 watt out in the shop but i rarely use it cause most of our outages don't last longer than a day and really we don't need that much power for that short of time...

To attract bears for an easy shooting. If you live in bear country it's your responsibility to think like a bear.

Re: Major snow storm

No problems here, we had an ice storm and power went out for 5 days. Masonry fireplace- plenty of heat (we had to move our bedroom because, without fans, it was TOO hot upstairs); gas stove; plenty of food we canned ourselves; hand pump for water.

IMHO, lose the generator, in an actual emergency you will run out of petrol.

i agree about the generator its just for temporary convenience not necessary at all if ya plan right...

~complexity is the root of all failure for a longterm backup plan~

give me a small cabin, woodstove, firewood pile, an outhouse, a stream for water and a years supply of food and i'll be just fine...

Great area! I worked in a salmon factory in Homer one summer, went over to Kenai across the bay. Love those halibut (big ass flounder we would call them here).

Homer is a cool place...i spent this last 4th of july camped out on the beach there in a tent...

I got a photo of the Homer spit in the distant background in this thread, you can just barely see the spit on the horizon reaching out into kachemak bay in the first photo...it was taken while i was across the bay looking back towards Homer...at the time i was spending that night in a yurt no less...

Left a red 1957 ford pu with bullet holes in the back with a friend up by Moose Pass the last time I was there in 78; ever see it?

I was camped out in that storm, at the Primrose Landing Campground. Until all the tree limbs started coming down. When the third one came down, I decided to make the sensible call and head back to town :Surrender:, got through a few hours before the avalanche closed the highway at mm 21. Not as much hiking as I had planned but plenty of adventure and things to be thankful for.

Good on you. A handful of years ago I had opportunity to fly in to Anchorage. When it was clear the peninsula was so beautiful. I recall the fishing villages along the coast line and the occasional homestead. Fortunately I hjad the best seat in the house and could enjoy the view. Never forgot that.
Used to build with logs in the 70's and 80's while in BC using the saddle notch and did some stained glass in the gables.
Thanks for the memories. Can never say never.

thank you mouse...i got a trip planned for january and i think i might have some winter shots worth sharing in a thread then. its tough to get my best winter memories in a photo, a lynx running off in the woods when approached, a wolf pack out on the frozen lake, a lone wolf in the fog, a coyote running along side of my snowmachine like its my own dog, a wolverine silently passing by...a sky so clear at night and so full of stars they are uncountable...

i'm taking the family on a multi-day snowmachine trip in january, probably 120 miles or so roundtrip. we'll be staying at old log cabins in wilderness, should see some wildlife and if the snow conditions are right take a ride up to the glacier...sometimes in the winter we'll see mountain goats hanging out low on the mountainside on the south side of the glacier...

I’ve been to the Primrose campground a few times...we’ve snowmachined up the Primrose trail before...an old gold mining trail from over a century ago...

I dug into my antique postcard collection and found one of Primrose falls...the backside says it’s a velox real photo postcard which would date this postcard somewhere between 1909-1914....

i'm not sure who the photographer was...hmm eos ...now schallerer owned the alaska shop photography business in seward around that time maybe its one of his relatives, cause thats not how he signed his photograhs...

i heard about that avalanche...
